It doesn’t matter if you coach little league or are a coach for a major league baseball team; you have to have the right attitude and know how to work with others to build a better team. While you may have experience in team building and relationships classes if you are a coach of a professional team, all of that can be put to use on any type of sports team no matter how small or what type it is.

For a team to function as a cohesive group, there has to be a sense of conraderie and personal relationship status. A team cannot support each other if they feel as if they are not part of the whole picture. It is important to build a spirit of comraderie and the team has to feel that each individual is as important as the other. While your sports team may have a star player, if the others do not feel as important or inferior, they won’t work as well and the entire team will suffer.

While it is basic knowledge that most everyone wants praise for their work, it is important to keep that in mind when working with children. As a coach for a professional team you may want to use praise when it is called for but with children it may be necessary to use it more often because these children are developing skills that will last a lifetime. This doesn’t mean you should coddle your team but it does mean that you need to give credit when credit is due.

Picking A Team Or Individual Sport

When you’re first beginning to get involved in sports, one of the first things to decide is whether you want to play a team sport, or an individual sport. As you might imagine, much of the answer to this question will stem from your own personality. Think about the types of things you like to do that aren’t related to sports. Take work projects, for example. If you find that you thrive in a team environment that requires collaboration and the support of others, you may find it simple and enjoyable to transfer those feelings onto a playing field. On other other hand, many people do their best work when they are alone. These are often the people that are said to have a “type A” personality, have huge amounts of personal motivation and do not have difficulty being productive without the urging of others.

Keep in mind that no matter if you choose to devote yourself to team sports or individual sports, you aren’t necessarily confining yourself as much as you might think. When you are competing in individual competitions, you’ll often notice that you see the same people at each competitive opportunity, especially if you are at the local and regional level. You can easily become friends with these other people who share your involvement in the sport, and use them as a source of support.  And, if you pick a team-based sport, you will often be practicing and conditioning your body on your own time, hitting the gym and lifting weights, outside of just practicing with your teammates on the field. Finally, keep in mind that it’s okay to experiment with a few sports before making a commitment.

Things To Keep In Mind When Coaching Youth Sports

Deciding to get involved in coaching youth sports is a far-reaching choice because it requires you to be committed to both the sport, and the team members. If you go about things in the right way though, it can be an extremely rewarding endeavour. Often, you’ll be making a lasting impression on your team, and helping them develop skills that will benefit them throughout their whole lives.

In order to be an effective coach, ideally you’ll be familiar with all rules and regulations that govern the game. It’s also good if you have played the sport at some time yourself, so that you have first-hand experience to offer the players. Whether you are on the field or off, whenever you are in the presence of your team, it’s important to conduct yourself in a way that is encouraging as well as inspiring. In order to help your team succeed, you’ll need to know what makes them tick, and that often means that you’ll wear many hats besides just being a coach. In addition to helping your team stay in top physical condition, you’ll also have to attend to their emotional state, which often takes a beating after particularly tough losses.

Also, you must have a full realization that your team will inevitably hit some rough patches that result in them not working as cohesively as they could. When these times occur, it will be to your advantage if you’re able to speak to the team in an honest, straightforward way, so during the extent of your coaching time, during good times and bad, encourage your team to come to discuss matters with you any time that they feel concerned.

Benefits Of Enrolling Your Child In Sports

If you’re seeking a new activity for your child, there are many great reasons to consider helping them get involved in sports. Whether they ultimately become involved in team sports or individual competitions, they will learn life skills such as commitment, dedication, motivation techniques and self-control. Furthermore, involvement in sports contributes to an overall healthy lifestyle. Medical experts recommend that people engage in at least thirty minutes of rigorous exercise per day. If your child is involved in sports, there’s a very good chance that their practice will last much longer than this amount of time, so they’ll be staying active without even having to take more time out of the day. Sports activities also help to increase a healthy body image in both boys and girls.

Sports can also help to foster a great work ethic too. The nature of sports encourages the act of working towards a goal and seeing it through to completion. Furthermore, kids learn to be satisfied with the outcome, whether it is good or bad, as long as they know they’ve given it their all.

Finally, sports can give your kids a variety of strong role models from both sexes to look up to for inspiration throughout life. However, do keep in mind that if you do choose to help your child pursue a passion for sports, you have a certain commitment to uphold as well, including helping your child get to and from practices, and even helping them to buy equipment and uniforms. Make sure that you are aware of all the costs involved right from the very beginning. Fortunately, you may be able to buy some equipment used, and if you’re having trouble getting your child to all the necessary practice sessions, you may be able to arrange for them to be part of a car pool.

Helping Your Child Get Started In Sports

Encouraging your children to become involved in sports is a worthwhile endeavour that will help your child stay fit, learn teamwork skills and appreciate the value of committment. If you want to help your child explore different sports that are of interest to them, for best results, start them in sports at a young age. If you live in an area that offers several types of sports, allow your child to experiment with several of them before choosing the ones that they enjoy the most. Do your best not to push your child into a sport that you’d prefer them to play. Even though it might be tempting to live your own dreams of being a star football player through the capabilities of your child, you’ll usually find that it’s most enjoyable when you allow your child the freedom to make their own choices.

Once your child chooses a sport, it’s now up to you to also mirror the commitment they have made by pledging to help them with transportation needs and uniform requirements. If they are still very young, it’s not likely that they will be able to get to practices and competitions on their own. Also, their budget probably cannot accommodate the tools and practice outfits that may be required by their sport. This is where you come in. Of course, you cannot realistically put your entire life on hold for the sake of your child’s involvement in sports, but there are certain things you can do to help ensure that you’re doing all you can to help your child stay focused on their chosen sport. If it’s not possible for you to consistently provide transportation, see if you can arrange for your child to catch rides to practice sessions with teammates who live nearby.

Finally, when it comes time for your child to compete, try your best to be supportive, no matter the outcome. Always resist the urge to compare your child to the abilities of their competitors. Ultimately, strive to give your child praise and respect when they put forth the required effort

The Importance of Strategy in Team Sports

As with most sports, team based sports are extremely competitive and at times, require a great deal of innovation to come out as the victor. The main reason for this is due to the fact that team sports incorporate many different components. The first and most obvious of these various components includes the diverse skill set of the players that make up the team. Each player must utilize their own specific skill in order to contribute to the team. Additionally, each skill set must be utilized at the right time in correlation with the various other skill sets that make up the team in order to be effective in accomplishing the common goal that the team seeks.

One way to accomplish such a goal and bring all of these elements together is through developing strategies. Strategies, or plays as they are commonly referred to in specific types of sports, are ways that players can cohesively meld with one another to develop a set of events that will lead to a common goal, typically scoring. Strategies are generally incorporated into the game during a pivotal point. Whether that point be an area in which the game is extremely close, and there is little time remaining and requires quick and precise action, or there is an ongoing problem that simply needs a quick and definitive remedy; strategies are an affective and important aspect of team based sports. Strategies can make or break a game that is close and on the brink of loss or win.

Three Team Building Exercises

Sometimes the difference between a good team and a great team is the bond of the teammates. With so many good athletes all over the world,  getting the edge over the competition can often mean good team work. Some of the best athletes in their sports never accomplish getting to the top because of their lack of teamwork and camaraderie. Instilling the value of team in a group of men or women will create an atmosphere of dependence. A team that relies on one another knows the value of each player and thus can play to the their best abilities. Here are a few team building exercises that can help to create camaraderie among players.

1. Take a Team Trip- Take the team out of town on a trip. Whether that be to a tournament or theme park, or sporting event. The idea is that when individuals being to spend more time together outside of sports they know each other better. They not only learn the intricacies of each teammate but also their likes and dislikes. The time together gives them time to focus on the team and bond together with out distractions.

2. Team Dinners- Team dinners once a week at a restaurant or coaches house creates the mentality that the team is a family. They play together, they work hard together, and they eat together. These are also good times to approach issues outside of sports and show an interest in the players lives.

3. Inspirational Talks or Movies- Going to see an inspirational talk or movie before important athletic events is an effective way to galvanize teams together and get them excited about a common goal.

Team building is essentially about showing the team that they are more than just a bunch of individual athletes, they are a family with a common goal.

Young Athletes and Good Grades

Many young athletes may never play a professional or even collegiate level sport. That being said, it is important that they understand the importance of going to school and getting good grades. Because after school and club sports for youth take up so much of their time, it is important for the coaches to remember and implement techniques to ensure that their players are keeping up to date with their school work and getting good grades.

In the past, it was always seen as the parents and schools responsibility to provide adequate guidance in the education area, but as sports have become more comprehensive, so should the approach to coaching every aspect of the game. If young athletes want to play at the college level they will have to maintain a certain grades. Here are few techniques to help coaches help their players.

Tips to Help Coaches

1. Report Card Check- Every couple of weeks have the athletes bring in their report cards or grades so that the coach can check to make sure every one is getting their work done on time. If athletes are falling behind, then disciplinary action such as running or suspension from the team are a great way to show the importance of getting good grades.

2. Homework Help- Offer help or even a homework night where the team gets together and everyone finishes any school work that they have. This is an effective way to create camaraderie and keep an eye on school work.

3. Guidance- Instead of being so direct, maybe just asking a player how school is going, what they like and don’t like, and how they are doing. Showing interest can go a long ways.

As a coach it is important to understand the role and impact you have on your players. Showing the importance of grades will go a long way in their lives.
