Here are just a few of the dangers of performance enhancing drugs.

Dangers of Performance Enhancing Drugs

1. Depression- Performance enhancing drugs change the chemical makeup of the body and that can cause depression in young adults whose hormones are already out of control. There has been documented studies since the late 80′s early 90′s on the clinical depression problems faced by users of steroids and drugs of the like.

2. Body Development- When young athletes are growing there bodies have a hard time handling the break down and rebuilding of their muscles. By introducing more chemicals that there muscles are not ready for when those muscles are still growing can cause catastrophic injuries and problems to the development of muscle tissue in the body.

3. Ethics- Using performance enhancing drugs is essentially cheating. This is not an attitude that should be fostered or condoned in any athlete or individual for that matter. By stressing the importance of fair play coaches can teach valuable lessons about steroids to young athletes.

Training is a fact of sports. Just like death and taxes are the only certainty in life, running in order to get in shape is a certainty in athletics. It doesn’t matter if you are the catcher on a baseball team or the goalie on a soccer team, running is going to be a fact of life. The important thing for coaches is to remember that running is a tool for exercising the mind and the body. Over running can cause developmental problems and under running can cause the team to be slow and out of shape. The key then is to find a happy medium between training to hard and not training hard enough. Here are a few running exercises meant to push the limits of players mental and physical abilities with out burning out there bodies.

Three Effective Running Exercises

1. Running Down Hill- Most coaches will have their players run up hill to build muscle, however, the most important aspect of running is the way the body is held while running. Running downhill requires the athlete to run with perfect form and control. Finding a road or street roughly 100 meters long and running 10 wind sprints down the hill with perfect form is great way to warm up.

2. Ladders- Ladders are running exercises that train sprinting ability as well as, the ability to stop and change direction quickly. Placing markers at 10 meters, 20 meters, 30 meters, 30 meters, and 50 meters; athletes should run to the first marker and back to the beginning, then to the second marker and back to the beginning, and on down the line to the 50 meters and back. This exercise will effectively train the athletes while not requiring so much running that their bodies aren’t recovering.

3. Short Sprints- Athletes who do not run long distances do not benefit from long running intervals because their bodies need to be trained for short bursts of speed. Therefore short 20 to 30 meter sprints are a great way to increase explosiveness in athletes.

1. Flexibility- Muscles are held together by tendons and ligaments. If these tendons and ligaments are not strong they will cause injury to the body during stressful, intense situations. Yoga is a great tool for strengthening those ligaments and tendons which will then stabilize the muscles.

2. Focus- One of the most critical aspects of yoga is focus. If the person doing yoga is not completely focused then the work out and poses will not be effective. 3. Breathing- Most people don’t know, but they don’t breathe correctly. Most people breathe through their chest and never allow their stomach to fully take a breath and inhale all the good oxygen into the body.
